ITR Filing Checklist for Salaried Individuals - FY 2025-26

Salaried individuals need Form 16 from their employer, AIS/TIS from the Income Tax portal, bank statements, and details of other income and investments to file their ITR accurately. For most salaried employees with simple income, ITR-1 (Sahaj) is the applicable form. The deadline for filing is 31st July 2025 for FY 2024-25.

Documents to collect before filing

From your employer

  • Form 16 (Part A - TDS details, Part B - salary breakup) - request this from HR
  • Monthly salary slips
  • Relieving letter / joining letter if you changed jobs during the year

From the Income Tax Portal

  • Annual Information Statement (AIS) - download from incometax.gov.in
  • Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS)
  • Form 26AS - Tax Credit Statement (verify TDS matches Form 16)

Investment & deduction documents

  • PF and PPF passbook / statement
  • ELSS / mutual fund investment statements
  • Life insurance premium receipts (LIC, term insurance)
  • Health insurance premium receipts (80D)
  • Home loan interest and principal repayment certificate from bank
  • Children's school tuition fee receipts
  • Donation receipts (80G)

Bank & financial

  • Bank statements for all accounts (to check interest income)
  • Fixed deposit interest certificates
  • Savings account interest details (deductible up to ₹10,000 under 80TTA)

Other income, if any

  • Rental income details (rent received, municipal tax paid, home loan interest)
  • Capital gains statements from broker / mutual fund house
  • Dividend income details (now taxable in your hands)
  • Freelance / consulting income, if any - Form 26AS will show TDS

5 things to check before submitting your ITR

  1. 1Verify your TDS matches 26AS - if there is a mismatch, your refund may be held up.
  2. 2Check pre-filled data carefully - the portal pre-fills from AIS/TIS but errors are common.
  3. 3Declare all bank accounts - list all active bank accounts and select one for refund.
  4. 4Choose your tax regime - compare Old vs New before confirming.
  5. 5E-verify within 30 days - your ITR is not complete until you e-verify using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or another method.
